We are opening a new PhD position on the topic of “Energy-efficient architectures for embedded AI in space”.

This PhD scholarship is in the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant project “IntelliSwarm”, with Prof. E. Magli as principal investigator. The project starts on June 1, 2026 and will last for 5 years; it aims to advance the use of AI in space through the development of methodologies for distributed imaging using satellite swarms, with computations performed directly onboard the satellites. The research activity will address the development of energy-efficient AI architectures based on low-precision numerical representations (e.g., ternary neural networks), with the aim of achieving performance similar to that of state-of-the art models at a fraction of the energy cost. The reference scenario is onboard computing on satellites for solution of inverse problems and inference.

The position has extra salary with respect to the baseline PhD salary at Politecnico di Torino. We target the selection of a top-level candidate by end of April 2026, with beginning of the PhD program on Nov. 1, 2026. Pre-doc scholarships are possible.
